Steel Power is a pioneering steel band known for infusing the vibrant soca and calypso rhythmic sounds of Trinidad and Tobago into the heart of Austin. With five musicians, including vocals, steel pan, bass guitar, percussion, and drumset, the group captivates audiences with its infectious rhythms, vocals, and energetic performances. Steel Power is poised to reignite the local Austin music scene, reaffirming the City's status as a vibrant melting pot of diverse musical influences.
"Each time we perform, familiar faces remind us just how timeless soca and calypso music is," Steel Power founder Rico Clarence said. "The crowd shares a passion for celebrating my cultural heritage with music from the islands of Trinidad and Tobago."
Steel Power performs soca, calypso, and crowd favorites, including Jamaica Farewell, Three Little Birds, Margaritaville, and Jump in the Line! Steel Power promises not only electrifying live performances but also fresh, original music that celebrates the tapestry of Caribbean culture. Their music transports listeners to the sun-soaked islands, infusing every performance with joy, rhythm, and soul.
Steel Power began in 1984 with Rico Clarence in New York! Back in the 90s they could be heard on 4th Street and 6th Street in Austin. Many Austinites remember the band at Liberty Lunch performing vibrant soca and calypso music. This was the birth of Austin’s steel band, Steel Power.
